Our son Westley was unexpectedly born last week. He was two weeks early! Jenna was a week late, so I thought I still had 2-3 weeks before he came. He weighed 8lb5oz and was 21 inches long.
I should have been more prepared. A week before he was born I was having regular contractions and was thinking he may be coming. But since they went away, I figured it was just a false alarm and I had plenty of time.
The day started out normal enough. Ben left early for work and I had an appointment first thing in the morning. When my midwife was checking me at the appointment she said, you are going to have this baby really soon. Then she said never mind, I will be having the baby today because my water had just broken. And man was there a TON of water. We waited awhile for it to slow down, but it just kept coming. Every time I tried to stand up there was another huge gush. I kept trying to call Ben, but he did not have his phone with him and was not answering. I also tried to call some of my friends to get Jenna (she was with me at the appointment) but no one was home. Everyone was out of town because it was just after Memorial Day.
Well, I got a hold of my mom and my mother-in-law and had them help me with calling around. My mom got online to the yellow pages to call people in the ward for me. And Ben’s mom was calling him. Finally I called Ben’s boss, who drove over to the other pool where Ben was at to tell Ben to go to the hospital. About this time I finally got dressed and drove to the hospital (20 – 30 min away) with Jenna. By the time I got in to the hospital I was completely soaked through with fluid. Out son must have had tons of water to swim around in!
Eventually my mom was able to get a hold of the Bishop’s wife, who was able to find someone to come get Jenna. Honestly I think Jenna was enjoying the whole thing. People kept bringing her toys and snacks. Also no one seemed to care that she was jumping on the chair.
Ben finally got there, but since I was doing well, I sent him away to go get some stuff. Jenna’s labor took FOREVER so I figured we had a while. Anyway, since I had nothing with me when I left that morning he needed to go get some things. It took him a while, since nothing at home was even ready, and there was traffic.
Well, Westley was NOT slow about coming out. A little after Ben left I was calling him to hurry back. He did make it back, and shortly thereafter Wesley was here.
By the way his name is spelled with a T. It is the spelling used in the Princess Bride.
